Jasper Sampson, Indian, who lives near Pembroke, was arrested Satur day by U. S. Deputy Marshal J. W. Tomlinson on the charge of aiding his two sons in evading the draft. One of Sampson's sons, Dallie Sampson, was recently arrested as a deserter and carried to Camp Jackson ano Lumberton and it' should be made an annual affair. It was planned to visit other se: tions of the county Friday but the trip had to be abandoned on account of business engagements that rnadt it impossible for many to go. Former Mayor Mitchell Killed at Aviation Field. Former Mayor John Purroy Mitch ell of New York was killed at Gersner field, Lake Charles, La., Saturday while flying in a scout machine. He was an officer in the aviation section, signal corps. The machine fell 600 feet. Mr. Mtchell became a flyer for the army after havng been defeated last fall for reelection as mayor of New York. He had served one term as chief executive of the country's big gest city, the youngest mayor ever elected there. He would have been 39 years old July 19. Mrs. Minta Purifoy of Wake For-1 est. Mrs. Minta Purifoy, an aunt of Mi s. S. Mclntyre of Lumberton, died yes terday morning at her home at Wakej Forest. Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Smith. Lucile, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Smith, who live at the Jennings cotton mill village, died Sat urday afternoon of colitis. H. R. Martin of Barnesville. Mr. H. R. Martin, aged 42 years, died at his home near Barnesville on June 24 as the result of a stroke of paralysis. He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters, Niza and Annie, 10 and 4 years old, 2 sisters and ore brother. The remains were interred at Bethesda church June 25th, the funeral, attended by a large crowd, being conducted by Rev. Mr. Draper. In the death of Mr. Martin the Barnesville section loses a good citizen. with Dr. W. A. McPhaul, county health officer, studying the manner in which health work is done in Robeson. Dr. Long was accompanied by Mr. J J. Hedrick of Lexington. They will make an effort to catch some Lumber river fish before returning home. The many friends of Mr. Frank C. St. Pauls, Red Springs, Lumber 1 ridge and Fairmont have passed sanitary ordinances complying with the plans outlined by the county board of health. To the Editor of The Robesonian: I am anxious to be of as much service to the people as -possible in connection with my duties as chair man of Local Board No. 1, and I have never yet denied any man a hearing on a matter connected with the war. But the increasing crowds that call daily to see me make it necessary that I fix some day each week to hear them. I am, and , have been for a long time, serving without one cent of com pensation, and I must, therefor-?, give some attention to my lav.r practice. Dial, Indian, a progressive farmer of Saddletree township, was a Lumberton visitor Saturday. As has been stated in The Robesonian, he bought a harvesting machine this year and was kept busy during the wheat-harvesting period. In Saddle tree, Lumberton and a part of Wish art townships he cut 75 acres of wheat, and in that territory he saw many acres that were cut by hand. He has recently purchased a threshing machine and a tractor. The Robeson ian would be glad to get reports from others who operated harvesting ma chines in the county this year.
